Wreck It Ralph

This has to be one of the most beautifully made movies I have seen in a long time. Granted I am a little late in watching this.

The story revolves around this arcade, after closing, the games come to life and go into the main circuit where they communicate with one another. The main game is called Fix It Felix, where the bad guy was living peacefully in the woods until a bunch of people moved him to the dump in order to build a penthouse. To seek revenge for his misplacement he goes to wreck the penthouse, but his plans get thwarted by Felix and his magic fixing hammer.

After the game is over, and the arcade closes, he is still treated like a criminal and is shunned by everyone in his game. He is not invited to parties. He is not able to hang out with everyone else. He is never able to feel as if he really belonged, and is treated like crap. He decides that he no longer wants to be the bad guy, and goes out to find a medal to prove that he can be a good guy too, and earn his way into fame and glory.

In the end, he helps out this one girl who is having her game taken over. Of course, almost wrecking everything in the process by mere accident. This movie has some really sad points, and some really happy points. It's a nice twist on the average plots of videogames.

I give it a 9/10. I'd recommend this movie to anyone.

Chocolate Covered.... Gummi Bears?

Ehhh.... I am not sure if they taste bad, or simply mediocre. I bought a box of the store brand version, and they were only a dollar, so I decided, why not?

I taste tested them on a few unsuspecting guinea pigs, and here are their testimonials:
"Eh, I wouldn't buy them on purpose"
"I am not sure if I like them or not, they're interesting"
"They taste like sh*t!"
I also had two people who simply refused to eat them after hearing what they were. And one person who actually said "I like it!" but I am not entirely sure if he just said that because I gave him candy, or if he truly meant it.

I would give them a 2 out of 10. I won't buy them again, and only did so this time on a whim.

These should be given to kids you don't like on Halloween. But better yet, I suggest you simply not waste your well earned money.

The Purge

Sucks. No need to sugar-coat it. Everything from the stupidity to the lack of conclusion sucked. This review is going to be chalk full of spoilers, FULL of spoilers.

1. Good guys always win
2. Stereotypes galore!
3. lack of conclusion
4. Too fast
5. Good points

1. Cops and Robbers

Good guys always win, you know that, I know that, we all know that. But just about everyone gets out without a single scratch, and even the homeless guy had minimal wounds. And the good guys, who were going to toss the nameless homeless man onto the streets to be killed like cattle to save their own asses, changed their tune in about 20 seconds, and grew a conscious. And instead think they can fight off an entire crime syndicate.Of course, they succeed. They kill off many of the people without sustaining a single cut.

The enemies were also reckless, careless, and for a crime syndicate, didn't know how to use weapons. Piggy-back rides, skipping, and smashing their way through the house is not the best way to make sure you kill them before they kill you. And for a crime syndicate who had reinforcements, it was rather small, 15 people at max. And lets not forget that everyone but the crime syndicate knows how to aim perfectly with a gun, including the daughter.

Also, saying that humans are an aggressive race, and allowing the purge to release pent up aggression and crime rates will drop significantly and the economy will become better, is stupid. Crime won't stop just because you allow everyone a free pass one day a year. And the only reason the economy would get better, is because you're killing off everyone without money.

2. Stereotypes

Now what do I mean? Well, lets start off with the Typical American Family. Stay at home mom, successful working father, a smart son who tinkers with technology, and an emotional rebellious daughter. Husband, wife, son, daughter, father is the breadwinner. Cliche'. Oh right, also, family drama, even more cliche'.

You also have the jealous neighbors, the skeptical child, and to make stereotype 10 times worse, the rich white families son providing sanctuary to the homeless poor black guy, who is running away from the white-dominant "purge" crime syndicate. Just listing that as a fact, make of it what you will.

3. There was an ending?

The neighbors come in to kill them, the husbands already dead from a knife-wound inflicted by the main bad guy who was killed off far too easily. The homeless guy who still has no name saves them. they keep the remaining neighbors alive and then kicks them out of their home, and the nameless homeless man just walks away without another word.

What was the conclusion? What changed? The movie revolved around the morality of the Purge, and nothing changed about it by the end of the movie. What happened after the fact? Did any of them die the next year? Was the homeless guy OK? Did he keep in touch with the family he didn't know, that was going to toss him out to the dogs, and that he risked his life to save? Does the boy blame himself for his fathers death? What the fuck? Make an ending that isn't half-assed!
4. Slow down!

This is one of those movies where everything kinda just... happened. No explanation, nothing. All crime is legal, including murder. And they made an effort to include murder in that disclaimer. certain weapons are restricted (How? Are the police going to come and arrest you if your gun is unauthorized for murdering people?). And you are NOT allowed to kill certain government personnel (ok, this sounds realistic). If it slowed down a bit, and not sucked as much, it would have been a much better movie.

5. What about the good?

The movie did have some good parts to it. The plot was great. The story about a society where the government condones crime for a 12 hour period in order to reduce crime and strengthen the economy is a great story! And someone who actually has skill with writing stories like this should write a good storyline to go with it.

All in all, I'd give this movie a 2 out of 10. It was pretty bad.

Playing Sly Cooper Thieves in Time

I am playing Sly Cooper 4 as we speak, and although I am only on part one (Turning Japanese) I can say that it still has the flare, surprises, and fun as its three predecessors. This animated short is actually a prequel to the game, if anyone is interested (who wouldn't be?) :

  • To tell you about it without ruining it. CLUE BOTTLES ARE BACK!!! I was highly disappointing when they took them out in sly 3, why would they do something like that? The clue bottles were a vital part of the game! but they are back! Yay!

  • The faces are... awkward looking. Idk... I still like the character design, but the faces look weird. No offense Sly.

  • The text of the Thievious Raccoonus are disappearing before their very eyes, so Sly and the game has to go back in time to find out why and save Cooper history... somehow without breaking like, a billion laws of physics in the process, but hey, it's a game.

  • The game did not lose any of its appeal, and now, with more characters to play, the experience is even more exciting! Trying out new skills, and using many great costumes (Robin Hood Sly *drools*).

I will add a more detailed review after I beat the game, so look forward to it!

Review: The Incredible Burt Wonderstein

Just watched this movie, not entirely sure I got my 9 bucks worth. But I'll give you a brief synopsis of what I did, and didn't, like of the movie.

Pro's.

1. They did good with some magic tricks, I was rather fascinated at watching them get to work. illusionment is something most people would find interesting.

2. It was funny! Kinda. It had parts that made me chuckle, and parts that made me cringe, gasp, and be bewildered.

Con's

1. Grotesque. It has a bit of gore, and pain in it. They show this, and amplify it tenfold for gasp-worthy responses. I personally don't mind grotesque, but the way it was portrayed was... SUPPOSED to be comedic... but I think it fell a little short of *chuckle+OMG!!!*

2. Predictable. You could see what was coming a mile away, not much of what happened was really a surprise besides the shock factor mentioned before.

Not a movie I would recommend, unless you want a first persons perspective. That said, the funny parts made it laughable, and the shock factor made you want to look away. Overall, I would say this movie was mildly entertaining. Giving it a 5 out of 10.

Raccoons are the Brightest People by Sterling North

I found this book to be wildly intriguing (pardon the pun). Although I should have read rascal before delving into this book, as this book is written to be a response to the correspondence that Sterling received from the many fans of his childhood autobiography. What I liked most was the way he added his and others observations clearly and detailed right beside many scientific studies, and his way of writing is not only descriptive, but easy enough to read that even a layman can do it. It is not everyday that I read a book so filled with a love of nature, and never before have I heard of someone so in touch with the natural world and all of its inhabitants.

This book also dispels some of the myths associated with wild animals being ferocious, to the point where it even mentions a quote by the late Carl Marty, and avid nature lover who has spent his life raising all sorts of animals in the wild, from raccoons to bears t even a wolf, said:
It is of great misfortune that the human race cannot be as gallant and gentle as are the so-called "wild" animals. (145)
and
I have yet to see unprovoked aggressive ferocity  in any animal [including bears], although defensive ferocity is fairly common. Given half a chance to be friendly, animals get along famously with other animals and also with kindly human beings. (151)
Acouple of the analogies mentioned in this book really fascinated me. Such as the story of Rusty the dog and Snoopy the raccoon, when Rusty wanted to come into the house, and went to seek the aid of Snoopy. How was the dog able to communicate with the raccoon his wants? The idea that animals are somehow able to communicate with each other has a very interesting topic that needs to be reviewed further.

A few of the other stories interested me as well, and I got depressed at the part where Moonlight supposedly died for the sake of her kits, protecting them from savage hunting dogs. And also the story of Old Jerry, who lived to the age of 22, and had a rather well life.

All my life, I have wanted to be in or near nature, and to befriend the various animals that live there. But although this dream has yet to come true, it encourages me to read stories of other people who have been able to live this dream life with nature.

The main point near the end really struck home. The notion that man and beast can live side by side in harmony is only denied due to the selfishness and bloodthirsty nature of man. Many people don't give a second though to animal well being and animal intelligence, because humans are innately thought to be better. There there is little difference between man and creature aside from mans tyranny and sadism. People need to realize, as Sterling did, that animals and people can live side by side.

i give this book a 9.5/10
